It’s here, it’s finally here… Kansas City Restaurant Week has officially kicked off this past Friday and will continue on until January 24th. If you are looking to expand your culinary palates, than this is the perfect week to explore. Kansas City is no longer considered just a mecca of just great barbecue, but it’s also the home of several James A Baird Award-winning restaurants as well. So be sure to follow along as Chelsea from WhatchaMakingnow and I take our taste buds on a flavor ride throughout Kansas City Restaurant Week.
First up is The Sundry, nestled in-between Kansas City’s Power & Light District and the Crossroads. How did the name of The Sundry come about? The Sundry means miscellaneous, which is matches perfectly with market, culinary class room, and sustainable restaurant serving up farm to table food seven days a week. Their food is sourced from local farmers, which helps keeps cost low. There is only 30% waste at The Sundry. For example, they make their own bread and what does not sale can be used for croutons in salads or meatloaf.
Their menu is very straight forward with simple ingredients, that don’t compromise the taste of the food or leave you with that tired sluggish feeling. Chelsea and I are Foodie Friends so sharing dishes was not a problem, plus it helps to keep your waistline in check when you’re only eating half. We sampled The Sundry’s house made soda and it was the best soda I’ve ever sipped. Be sure to ask for the Caramom Lemon it will not disappoint. Here is what we dined on:
- Sous-vide of the Earth- Farm Distillery pork chop with compound herb butter served with wood mood mashed purple potatoes and rieger whiskey glazed carrots.
- Shatto Ricotta Gnocchi with Wakarusa valley mushrooms, sautéed kale, shaved fennel and Parmesan.
The Sundry is not only a cool place to eat, but to shop for groceries as well. Their market place boasts collaborations with tons of local makers such as My Sassy Pantry, Vitacraft and a host of others. Above the restaurant you will find an amazing event space to rent and it also houses their fabulous culinary classes. The Sundry also supports local culinary schools by providing apprenticeships for training.
If you are looking for a place to dine that is out of the ordinary, give The Sundry a try you will not be disappointed.
