I am taking the food portion of my blog in a new direction, previously my focus was restaurant reviews. While I do love a good restaurant and I will continue to post my reviews. Restaurants will no longer be my main focus, Food is broad and limitless. When it comes to educating others on the truth about food, how to prepare it, and where it comes from, is simply infectious.
Let’s learn more about food together, First up is Tangelo’s…
What is a Tangelo? A Tangelo is a hybrid of grapefruit and tangerine. Tangelos are very juicy and sometimes they are referred to as “Honeybells”. When you see a tangelo you assume it is like an orange, they have the same color and outside appearance. You will quickly discover this fruit is different, the smell of a Tangelo has a light floral scent. Peeling a Tangelo is a breeze in comparison to an orange, the nipple as it’s called is an outside bump which can be easy pulled to make peeling easy.
The juice factor is off the charts, Tangelos are extremely juicy (warn your neighbors prior to biting into one, someone’s eye is sure to pay). The taste is similar to a tangerine with a touch of tangy grapefruit. The acidity of a Tangelo is low and tends to have less seeds than a traditional orange. Be sure to look for Tangelos that are deep orange in color to ensure the best flavor.
My two cents: I love them! The slightly tart-sweet flavor is absolutely perfect and satisfies your taste buds. The University of Arizona states one medium Tangelo is 47 calories, 53 mg of vitamin C and contains 87% water, talk about fruit with benefits. Try a Tangelo today and leave a comment sharing your thoughts.
