I was lucky to receive an invite to a complimentary lunch prior to the official opening at “Providence New American Kitchen Restaurant”. Providence New American Kitchen is a locally-owned, full-service contemporary American restaurant featuring locally sourced ingredients located in the historic Hilton Hotel President at 1329 Baltimore in downtown Kansas City, Mo. The restaurant is accompanied by The Drum Room Lounge, a notable bar and cocktail lounge with an illustrious history in the Hilton Hotel President
Opening on October 11, 2012, Providence New American Kitchen offers a common place to gather in an intimate 5,000-square-foot setting with a dining experience similar to a Midwestern supper club with a concentrated homage to Americana. Based on the rich history of the restaurant’s location, Providence New American Kitchen creates a warm atmosphere incorporating reclaimed wood and colorful art prints depicting the nation’s history. Beautifully crafted cuisine and cocktails with simple, fresh ingredients and attention to the comfort of Midwestern flavors are noted in the menu, which highlights steaks and chops, fresh seafood, soups, and salads. The menu offers a variety of appetizers, entrees and desserts offered to intimate diners or large groups.
Upon entry, my guest’s and I were greeted by a hostess who was very friendly. She confirmed our reservation and walked us over to our table. The restaurant decor had an uptown, chic, and modern rustic feel almost like an upscale club.
The menu display’s a fresh and unique twist on classic American cuisine from their soup’s featuring “Smoked Tomato Bisque” to their “Kobe Style Burger with Garlic Mayo Maytag Blue Cheese”.
We ordered two appetizers: The BBQ Maple Glazed Pork Belly and the Loaded Potato Pierogi.
The BBQ Pork Belly was lightly covered in a maple chili glaze with roasted apple. I found it to be a delightful and satisfying bite of pork belly goodness. The pork belly had a light crisp outer layer, and then melted into a buttery smooth and flavorful bite, with a pop of pineapple. I would describe the Loaded Potato Pierogi as a “potato empanada.” It had a crispy outside with a light and fluffy potato filling. This dish was served with bacon and a sour cream and chive cream sauce. It was absolutely delicious!
I ordered the Pan Seared Rainbow Trout with Lobster Sausage, Baby Potatoes and Bacon Broth
I had never eaten rainbow trout; I found it to be a fresh, light and firm fish. The baby potatoes were a welcomed addition and the bacon broth was delicious, very straightforward bacon tastes which help marinate the light broth. The lobster sausage was okay, however the dish was an overall success.
My guest ordered the Grilled Scottish Salmon with Saffron Tomato Orzo, Roasted Vegetable and Spinach and the Applewood Smoked Meatloaf with Sour Cream Mash, Fresh Sautéed Green Beans and Wild Mushroom Gravy. The salmon was cooked perfectly moist and seasoned well, although not a fan of orzo. She commented on how the spinach and veggies were wonderful. The meatloaf was a mix of various meats including lamb; I believe the added grill technique upgraded the taste from your mom’s meatloaf to more of a steak taste. The wild mushroom gravy was unique and unexpected but complimented the meatloaf like Cinderella’s glass slipper to her ball gown, a perfect fit!
My Recommendation: If you are looking for a cool, chic, upscale yet comfortable place to dine, I would recommend the Providence. Its new spin on classic American cuisine will win you over. The staff is friendly and knowledge about the menu and will assist you and matching excellent recommendations if you are unsure on what to order. Our food was delivered to our table in considerable amount of time. The restaurant manager was friendly as well, as he spoke with my table about how he loved the meatloaf.
