The Holidays

This is my absolute favorite time of the year. It’s officially Holiday season, the time when you want to tolerate (I mean) spend time with your family and friends. I recall the Holidays growing up when my sisters and I would decorate the tree in silver tinsel. We would later find several plies of tinsel and other substance that the dog left. LOL! Our dog sure loved tinsel.

My father would cook a great meal, My mother would attempt to cook a dessert. By attempt I mean fail. After my sisters and I grew up, we begin to start families of our own and creating individual holiday traditions. It would be years before we would get together again. Not because we didn’t want too, But having to visit various set of grandparents was a new tradition in itself.

The holidays can be so expensive, especially when you have a large family to buy gifts for. I learned of a few ways to give great gifts without breaking the bank:

  • You can thrift a gift (The Thrift Sisters) have a great video on thrifting for the Holidays
  • If thrifting a gift is not your thing…This is the best time to shop retail. Retailers are competing to get your holiday dollars by slashing prices left and right.
  • Be sure to sign up to your favorite retailers app. For instance, Target has the Cartwheel app – Everyday from now till December 24th you can save 50% on the latest toy. Be sure to check the app everyday.
  • Don’t have the cash to give a gift? Go throughout your house and find that one item you know someone would love. My sister loves my vintage Dooney and Burke purses, which may be a great gift.
  • Look for Coupons (HUGE SAVINGS) on gifts. Coupons. com has a awesome gift guide that will fits all gift givers: 1) Budget Friendly Gifts, Gifts for Enthusiasts and Hostess Gifts. As a matter of fact, They are giving away (1) $100 gift card every week from now till December 25th. The grand prize winner will win $500 dollars. • Make a gift for your loved one.
  • A white elephant exchange is always fun!

Whether you eat a great meal for the Holidays, give / make great gifts or participate in a gift exchange, Let the holidays be unique to you and your family. It’s not about receiving the latest camera (I hope my husband reads this post) or eating until you cant see straight. The Holidays are about quality time with those your love. Cherish Life, Time and most of all Love!

These are great holiday traditions! It does get harder to get together as everyone gets older, but it’s so nice to think back on these memories:) Hope you’re having a great day!

Other than money my sons said they don’t need or want anything, so a new sweater and money will be under the tree…whenever I get it put up!

Speaking of decorating the tree… My Daughter put hers up before Thanksgiving so she would have more time to enjoy it. I haven’t even thought about putting up a tree this year.

Great ideas for gifts when money is tight. I love traditions….I have Christmas with my immediate family then leave every 26th for Christmas in Michigan with my Mom and brother and his family. Back home by New Years….it is busy but I cherish the memories we make each year.
