Move over Kansas City, we have a new restaurant in town. But not just any restaurant a true Kansas City sustainable restaurant. While there are a few farm to table restaurants in Kansas City none are quite like The Sundry. The Sundry is located just outside of the Kansas City Power & Light district. With a plethora of restaurants to choose from what makes them stand out? Well I am glad you asked.
First, The Sundry is has a unique weekly changing menu. Second, the restaurant isn’t just a restaurant but a local grocery store which includes fresh produce, diary and refrigerator products, and butchery. The store sells Missouri and Kansas based products as well. Lastly, they offer cooking and specialty classes to the public.
I had a few moments to with (owner) Ryan Wing to learn more about The Sundry
- What’s the story behind the name “The Sundry KC”?
“As Aaron (who is the partner and head chef) and I worked on ideas for the business. We had overlapping ideas to begin with. The Sundry was an idea that Aaron had thought of. We felt as if the name made sense because the name “The Sundry” means miscellaneous. So that’s kind of what The Sundry is given all of our local sourcing. We have all of these various farmers and local brands streaming into the store. So we liked the name and just went with it.”
- What inspired you to open your own store/restaurant?
Aaron and I just really liked local food and sustainability. We think what has been done local food wise has been good, but they don’t always work for everybody. So we had this idea of why don’t we just create a market with a lounge and local food. Then we can integrate a kitchen so people can how to cook with those things. So that was the motivation behind it, to try to take local food to the next step.
So what’s my take on The Sundry?
My initial introduction to the restaurant/market was through a blogger. She explained how a local restaurant opened next to her place of employment and raved about their food. I’ve learned that if locals give out great reviews – TRUST THEM! I decided to stop by in December and order the raised beef, roasted Brussel sprouts, and garlic mash potatoes to go. Everything was delicious! I was excited to visit the store again (without placing a to-go order). I was even more nervous to bring my kids. Now, my children are very well behaved. Ok back to the food, I placed an order for biscuits and gravy, a cinnamon roll, and the vegetarian lentil soup.
The biscuits and gravy were made from scratch biscuits as well as the sausage/gravy played on my tongue like Lionel Ritchie’s hit single “All Night Long”. The cinnamon roll was made from scratch although I am accustom to soft cinnamon rolls. The outer core was firm and the softer as you eat to its inner core. The heart of the cinnamon was truly the best and worst part. Best, because it held all of the cinnamon goodness and worst because I was finished. The vegan lentil soup is something new to me. I was a bit skeptical. But after the first bite, it was as if the spoon was glued to my hand. And I could not let it go, I kept scooping and scooping. The soup was topped with homemade onion fried bites and a basil cream sauce. Ok, did you catch that? I said basil cream sauce. I highly recommend you give The Sundry a try. Best of all mom’s it is kid-approved. I give it 4 out of 4 plates.
Looks yummy!!
Thanks it was great!
I see you are doing your thing…wish I could get to KC and tag along!
