I was elated when given the opportunity to attend the Farm Food tour sponsored by the Kansas Farm Bureau. This opportunity gave me a chance to take a closer look not only into the lives of a farmer. But the process of what our food goes through before it’s on our plates. It also shattered various stereotypes against farmers as well. I’m going to take you along for the ride as I traveled across Kansas, discovering how our food is really made.
The first stop on my Kansas farm food tour was Cal ‘Ann Farms located in Basehor, Ks.
Where did the name of the company originate?
Now in its fifth generation of farmers, our family’s agricultural roots run deep. The third generation to farm, Calvin and Annette Meyer worked with their son Jeff at their side for many years before officially forming Cal-Ann Farms in 1979.
After 19 years of working in the dairy industry and the passing of both Calvin and Annette, Jeff and his wife Pam made the switch to beef cattle and crop farming. How did they begin in the basil business?
Jeff and Pam begin to farm tilapia via an aquaponic system. The fish was selling well, but the demand for fresh herbs began to rise (especially basil). They decided to end the process of farming tilapia. And remain focus on raising herbs. They wanted to make sure their products remain organic. So they did just that.
How long does it take to grow basil?
It takes about four weeks from seed to a full basil plant. We plant the seeds. Afterwards, they are stored for about 10 days until they begin to sprout. The plants also enjoy a little music to help with sprouting (unfortunately they aren’t fans of heavy metal). Afterwards they are moved to the greenhouse until they are ready to ship to stores.

- Dill
- Mint
- Rosemary
- Watercress
Do you sell your herbs to other stores outside of Missouri or Kansas?
Because we like to give provide stores with the freshest herbs as possible. And the herbs to not travel for long distances well. At this time we do not services stores outside of Missouri or Kansas.
What time of the year do you sell the most basil?
The spring and summertime is the highest demand.

So what’s my take on Cal ‘Ann farms?
The owner’s Jeff and Pam are welcomed us with open arms. The basil farm was clean, neat, and warm (They have to keep the basil comfortable enough to grow you know). It was the first time; I’ve heard of or smelled “lemon basil”. It smelled like freshly squeezed lemon juice. And I believe it would make a nice garnish in lemonade (with winter around the corner, I’m thinking about summer already). I could tell Jeff and Pam were passionate about their plants from the mood music they use to get the plants to grow. To the greenhouse which provides great lighting and protection from the plants, but makes a great area for photo shoots. After visiting the farm, I’m planning on starting an herb garden of my own this summer.
