Summer is my favorite time of the year. The weather is beautiful, the pools are packed and the eateries open up their patios for outdoor dining. But nothing says summer quite like barbecue. Yes, summer is better when the grill is smoking with ribs, chicken, and veggies.
My hometown of Kansas City, Missouri is one of the nation’s barbecue paradises. Kansas City barbecue has been featured on popular shows as Diner, Drive-ins, and Dives, Anthony Bourdain No Reservations, and The Best BBQ Done. The Huffington Post has even named some of Kansas City BBQ joints, as one of the best bbq restaurants in America. Yes, one of the best in America – now that is big.
BBQ is so big in Kansas City, that some would even say you grow up teething on a rib bone. This summer, I am taking you on a Barbecue tour of my city. Every week I will feature one barbecue restaurant to give you the real deal on Kansas City barbecue. So come along on for the ride and don’t forget your appetite.
First up is Porky’s Blazing Barbecue, located in Grain Valley, Missouri. I was referred to Porky’s from an old coworker of mine. He raved about their barbecue, so I had to give it a try. I admit Porky’s barbecue is not the easiest to find, you will travel down a long country road and if you blink you will miss it. The restaurant’s exterior looks like an old barn. But don’t let this discourage you; some of “the” best food is located in the most imperfect places.
The family and I ordered the combo platter which includes ribs, sausage, pulled pork, brisket, turkey and ham. I wanted to get a variety of meats to taste test. My recommendations would be the house made sausage which had great snap and delicious flavor. The pulled pork is smoked to perfection and melts in your mouth. My favorite was the ribs, unlike most barbecue joints the ribs were thick, smoked, and seasoned perfectly. You will also be delighted by Porky’s three house made barbecue sauces.
The house made rolls can definitely hold their own; they are very close to popular favorites like Ms. Schubert’s. The trio of sides included beans, cole slaw, and potato salad. My favorite out of the three was the cole slaw made vinegar Carolina style with a tang. My recommendations – Try the pulled pork, ribs, or house made sausage, you will not be disappointed.

I ate at Porky’s when I was in Kansas City for training a few years ago. Sooo good! I need to get back there pronto.
Ok, I’m from Virginia so forgive me for getting a little competitive about this “best barbeque” situation. I will concede this, though. Those pictures made me hella hungry and I just ate lunch….
